Shenzhen’s speed is hidden in the reflections of its glass curtain walls. In the subway, everyone looks down at a screen, but when you lift your head - the sky, the towers, the water of the bay - all of it suddenly strikes the eye.
I like walking from Shekou toward Houhai. At dusk, the wind comes in from the sea with a trace of salt, passing through towers that were built less than ten years ago.
Here, “old” means ten years ago. “New” means the shopping mall opening next month. Time is compressed in this city until it almost leaves no trace, which makes photographs especially important. They preserve the moment when “the sky back then had not yet been blocked by the new buildings.”
